Wikileaks and Julian Assange

Hey Group,

I found this article about Julian Assange , founder of Wikileaks , a non profit organization that publish secret documents and information in the public domain, Julian Assange believes that total transparency is the key to success and good for all. I think that he poses a profitable impact on his organization but a negative impact on the society. Wikileaks was founded in 2006 for the exchange of free information for that they have anonymous sources and they hack into secure systems to find documents to expose to people. According to one of the interviews of the founder this organization doesn't have any official headquarters which is actually not accountable in my opinion and there are many law suits filed against Julian for disobeying the laws.

Are the people harmed ?? My answer would be yes not only on the people but also on national security because its actually leaking the confidential information of the government i agree that everybody has a right to know but then doing it unethically is not the way to do it it is possible that by doing the way Julian is doing it can lead to spread of misinformation the only claim that the information is accurate but their is no evidence to prove it. Its open to public so anybody from anywhere can access the information which is a chance of loosing security and credibility.

Relation to Organizational Behavior?
I think the way Julian behaves is quiet unethical he only thinks that he is right in what he is doing not worrying about the national security and society. The way he perceive the information puts the danger to US diplomacy on a whole and by exposing important information, it puts the country at a greater risk for terrorism. According to Army Times, "A recent document spill by WikiLeaks included detailed and blunt exchanges between foreign and U.S. officials on such politically sensitive matters as a top-secret U.S. bombing campaign in Yemen".

This is by far my analysis about the organization and its founder?? I will be looking forward for your comments so that we can have some interesting point of view on this.

  1. I agree that by not having a headquarters it makes it hard to believe it is actually a company. I think he has used the laws to his benefit. Just like putting the main server in Sweden where there are harsh laws for whistle blowers. We know he has many law suits against him already but since his is so secretive what do we really know about him? I don’t think he is for the United States. If he was he wouldn’t be putting our whole country at risk by posting the information he does. I also think that our government should keep better control of its information. I think it opens up a lot of questions that have yet to be answered. How is he getting his hands on the information? Is he paying someone? Can he do all this by himself? Who is helping him? I think this is a topic that isn’t going to go away anytime soon. Every time he posts more information the US press gives him free publicity. Why would he quit?

  2. Yes i think you are right the information he is getting is from anonymous unauthorized sources which puts the information itself in question.

  3. I disagree with you Ayushi at some point. When we talk about unethical behavior of wikileaks of disclosing information which put security and society at a stake, why don't we talk about the information disclosed by wikileaks. If you see, most of the information disclosed is about unethical behaviors of Government, people and politics. At his interview with Forbes, He once said," You could call it the ecosystem of corruption. But it's also all the regular decision making that turns a blind eye to and supports unethical practices: the oversight that's not done, the priorities of executives, how they think they're fulfilling their own self-interest. The way they talk about it." And I agree with that. Transparency is very important and Julian Assange has created a new revolution in the field of media transparency.

  4. I think that Julian Assange discloses the secret information of government and institution is an ethical behavior because it against the law of secrecy. For example, in its landmark ruling on the Pentagon paper, the US Supreme Court ruled that "only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government." I agree with that. Therefore, I think a leader who have an ethical behavior to company is really important. A good organizational culture should encourage ethical behavior and discourage unethical behavior. What's more, I think ethical behavior may "cost" the organization. Just like Dena said, wikileaks will face many lawsuit issue so that they need to spend their time and money to against the law. In addition, Julian Assange knows how to use media to spread their information and good at networking. He successfully use media or press to tell people what is wikileaks and participate in some talk show in order to let people think he is doing the right things rather than just leak some protected information. In the end, I agree with Ayushi that he is putting America in risky position and use unethical way to run this organization.

  6. Hi

I found all of your comments interesting here is my answer

I think the website is quiet controversial is the way of you seeing it right or wrong it all depends on one's perception the way i look at it is i put national security as a priority rather than just knowing the information which is also not authorized. Secondly its also harming the people because without even taking there permission their names are being mentioned on the websites that is posing potential threats to the people which is being proved in one of the articles on New york times.
